We lost and celebrated the incredible life of Attorney Nathaniel Byrd this past month. A loyal and engaged member since University CoWork opened and moving his 3-person law firm here to our Chicago Office in 2018, he has been a positive fixture in our community - and particularly the Chicago Office dedicated desk area - for more than five years.
Attorney Byrd was kind, smart, and witty. He enjoyed reading the daily newspaper and was never too busy to discuss law, religion, politics, philosophy, or how to best improve our community. Nate Byrd particularly enjoyed prepping for and teaching Sunday School.
Often coming to work sporting a fedora, he always had a smile and greeted people warmly, even if busy preparing for a meeting or working on a tight deadline. University CoWork member and Shemsu Heru Consulting LLC owner Addison Morgan shared "Wow. He was always pleasant, helpful every time I saw him in the office. He will be sorely missed." We all share this sentiment.
Attorney Byrd was one of the first attorneys to use our Zoom Room for depositions and court appearances, initially during the pandemic and continuing after it subsided. He was always open to new ideas and technology.
It has been a great honor to get to know and work with Attorney Byrd, and I was honored to represent his University CoWork office community at the January 2024 memorial. I shared with his family and partners how much he was loved and will be missed by all of us. Attendees gained insights as to the extent of his contributions to Chicago, including how he gracefully co-captained his beloved westside John Marshall Metropolitan High School (East Garfield Park) basketball team through a period of heightened racial tension in the mid-1960s. Check out this YouTube, particularly the 1:01 mark.
We hold Attorney Nathaniel Byrd close within our hears, and seek to continue learning from and emulating his shining example.
